Have you ever debated with yourself about getting gas and then decided it was no big deal? Lots of car owners make it a habit to do exactly that and end up driving around with way too little gas in the tank. Cary’s Auto Service wants to help you to understand why that’s not the best idea.
You Can Cause Engine Damage
It sounds odd to say that driving with only a little bit of gas can cause engine damage, but it really can. The engine needs a specific amount of fuel to end up in the engine. That fuel mixes with air and then gets hit with a spark at just the right time. That’s what keeps the engine running. If there isn’t enough fuel hitting the engine at the right time, that causes engine sputtering, misfiring, and engine knocking. All of that is obnoxious, for sure, but it’s also the beginnings of engine damage. Over time, that shortens the life of your car’s engine.
Or Cause Damage to the Fuel System
The fuel system can take a real beating from you choosing to drive around low on gas, too. There are a lot of different parts in the fuel system, that end up affected. The fuel pump relies on having gas around it to keep it cool while it’s running. It also is more likely to suck up sediment from the tank if the gas levels are low in the tank. That can overload the fuel filter, which causes more problems throughout the fuel system, including the fuel injectors. Anything that gets past the fuel filter can end up clogging the fuel injectors, which directly affects how much fuel ends up in the engine.
Worst-case Scenario Leaves You Stranded Somewhere
As if the long-term issues weren’t bad enough, you could end up stranding yourself somewhere if you run too low on gas. And if there are passengers with you when that happens, they’re stuck, too. With roadside assistance you might not be terribly worried about this option, but you do still have to wait for someone to come to you. It’s an inconvenience at the least, and that can be bad enough.
