There are all kinds of recommendations for when you need new tires, but really those are all just general recommendations. Cary’s Auto Service wants you to know that you need to really look at your tires in order to determine if it’s time for new tires.
The Sides of the Tires Look Bad
When you walk up to your car in the parking lot, take a second to pay attention to your tires. How do the sides look? It’s really easy to scuff the outer edges of your tires on a curb, so it’s possible you’ve got a few scrapes and marks. What you need to look for also are signs that the sidewalls of the tires are thin or blistering in any area. These thinner spots can be more prone to blow out.
There’s Hardly Any Tread Left
While you’re paying attention to your tires, how does the tread look? If you’re noticing that the tread seems a lot smaller than it used to be, you’re probably not wrong. Tire tread wears off a lot more quickly than most car owners realize and it’s important to keep an eye on it. If the tire tread seems to be wearing unevenly, you may have alignment or balance issues.
The Tires Themselves Don’t Look Great
By now you should have gotten a pretty good look at most of the tire. Newer tires are dark black in color and they’re pretty shiny and fancy. Over time, heat, cold, and the elements take a toll on your tires. By the time it’s close to time to replace your tires, they probably look more gray than black and they might look a bit worse for the wear. That’s because rubber does break down over time and that can cause failures in your tires, even if you’ve got plenty of tread left.
Handling Has Gotten Terrible
The really important part of knowing whether it’s time for new tires is to pay attention to how your car is handling. Your tires are the foundation for handling. If you’ve got uneven tread, no tread, or other issues with your tires, your car may not handle very well at all. It’s likely even worse during bad weather. Any vibrations, wobbling, or other handling issues are a sign that you need to get your tires checked.
