Shaky steering can leave you feeling as if you’re not able to properly control your car, and that’s not a good thing at all. Cary’s Auto Service wants you to know about a few of the possible causes when it comes to shaky steering.
Tire Issues
A lot of what happens between the tires and the pavement is what you feel through the steering wheel. So, when you’re driving over a cobblestone street, you’re going to have shaky steering. But tire problems, like uneven tread or a blister in the tread, are going to cause shaking as well. If you’re feeling shaky steering, it’s always a good idea to look first at the tires to see if there is something going on.
Wheel Alignment Problems
If the tires are okay, you might have wheels that are out of alignment. Wheels go out of alignment extremely easily, which is why wheel alignments are recommended to be done as often as they are. You should get your car’s wheels aligned when you get new tires and roughly every 7,000 miles or so. This recommendation varies depending on the vehicle, so check your owner’s manual for details.
Brake Trouble
When you feel the shaking in your steering is important information, too. If you’re feeling the shaking in the steering when you’re trying to stop the car, the problem may well be in the brakes. The faster you’re going and the harder you’re trying to stop, the more shaking you’re likely to experience. It’s definitely the brakes if that’s the only time you’re feeling the shaking.
Suspension and Steering Issues
The most obvious reason that you might be having shaky steering is that there’s something wrong either in the steering system or in the suspension. Sorting those issues out can be tricky because those two systems work together to help the car handle properly. If the problem is in either the suspension or steering systems, you’re likely to experience problems the entire time you’re driving. You may also hear noises when you turn the steering wheel in a certain direction.
