Signs My Car Battery Is Dying

The battery in your car, truck, or utility vehicle should last three to four years. After this duration, the battery is going to start dying. In most cases, you may receive a warning before the battery dies completely. We are going to discuss the signs that a car battery is dying below.

Battery Light

The battery light should turn on briefly when you start your automobile. If it remains on, the battery could be going bad. The engine control unit will turn on the battery light if the battery is unable to maintain a charge. In addition, the battery will discharge completely.

Difficult Starts

This will make starting your automobile extremely difficult. If you have had to jump-start the battery frequently lately, the battery needs to be replaced. If your battery is relatively new, have it tested to make sure there is nothing wrong with it. If the battery is old, you need a new one.

Electrical Issues

The battery works with the alternator to supply your vehicle’s electrical accessories and components with plenty of power. If the battery is struggling to produce power, you will start to have issues with all of the power accessories and components.

Corrosion/Gunk

Another sign that your car needs a new battery is if it is leaking battery acid. This will corrode the battery terminals and battery cable connectors. Unfortunately, even if you clean the corrosion, the terminals and connectors will get corroded again as the battery continues to leak acid.

Sulfur Odors

In fact, you may be able to smell the battery acid leaking out of the battery. The acid found inside of a car battery is sulfuric acid. This acid smells like rancid eggs. As such, if you smell rotten eggs when you pop the hood and are close to the battery, you’ve got a leaking battery.

Misshapen Case

Finally, the chemical reaction inside of the battery can go bad when the battery gets too old. This can crack the battery case or cause it to bubble. It can also warp the battery case. You definitely want to replace the battery right away if there is a problem with the shape of the battery case.
